Sex ed

It is no surprise that American tend to be hung up on sex and often don't have healthy attitudes about it although I think our little community is more positive about it. I think it dates back to our Puritan heritage.

Anyway, here's an interesting article that notes Congress has spent $1.5 billion on abstinence only education, which is a waste of money. Students who have this education have sex before marriage as much as others but don't use protection as much and girls have higher pregnancy rates.

Also, only 48 per cent of Americans report they are sexually satisfied. In Italy, it's 64 per cent. In Span, it's 90. Spanish men are noted for being the best lovers and American men rank fifth from the bottom.

Here's the article:

Why do Europeans tend to be progressive about sex than we are. It's unfortunate.

  1. This blog makes a certain study "spring" to my mind. I wonder if you've heard about it:

Several years ago, The USA funded a study to determine why the head on a man's penis is larger than the shaft. The study took two years and cost over $1.2 million. The study concluded that the reason the head of a man’s penis is larger than the shaft was to provide the man with more pleasure during sex.

After the results were published, France decided to conduct their own study on the same subject. Convinced that the result of the American study was incorrect, after three years of research at a cost of in excess of $2 million, the French researchers concluded that the head of a man’s penis is larger than the shaft to provide the woman with more pleasure during sex.

When the results of the French study were released, Canada decided to conduct their own study. The Canadians didn't really trust the American or French studies. So after nearly three hours of intensive research and a cost of about $24.00 (the price of a case of beer), the Canadian study was complete. They concluded that the reason the head on a man’s penis is larger than the shaft is to prevent your hand from flying off and hitting you in the forehead.

  2. As a European I can say American attitude to sex is perplexing. You have this enormous exportable industry called porn and yet have major hang ups about sex itself. Even what acts are permissible. Sex before marriage here in the UK is the norm. Nobody advocated it nor forbade it, more likely it's an acceptance of what has happened between two people throughout history and laws can't control this nor ideas of abstinence. You can't legislate nature and that is ultimately what sex is - natural.

    2. I wish I knew why we are so prudish. And that we could find a way to be more liberated about sex.

    3. And Del, being a European, you are fortunate to live in a place that is not prudish about sex and views it as natural.

  3. Sorry but I don't think this is a school issue. This is something for parents and the family doctor to handle. But then, not many parents give their kids Screw the Roses on their 18th birthday.

    1. I agree it is not a school issue, but, unfortunately, some schools teach abstinence only programs that make things worse.

  4. Mental note: visit Spain.

I think it does indeed go way back to how this country was started. I think America is a fear-based society with rigid rules" that results in a culture so suppressed we are gluttonous for the extremes -- an almost primal instinct to express our sexuality in shocking ways that will get noticed.
