Hiding

Saw a thing on CNN Money that 80 per cent of spouses hide some purchases from their spouses. Surprisingly, clothes or accessories were 24 per cent for men and 43 per cent from women. Don't their spouses pay attention when they wear these clothes?

Alcohol was 19 per cent of the men and 8 per cent of the women. Music was 14 and 8, Gifts 12 and 21 and dating websites were four per cent for men and one per cent for women.

So do you want to share? Do you hide purchases from your spouse?

  2. I do not hide purchases, now. I used to. That was what was modeled to me by my parents. They lied and hid things from each other constantly.

As to the question don't they notice when the clothes are worn? My father would ask if something was new, and my mother would go right on the offensive and say, "No I've had this for months, you didn't notice because you never pay attention me".
Not wanting to continue in the lukewarm relationship we had, my husband and I made the conscious choice to change, and we have. One of those changes is complete open-ness and honesty. A very difficult thing to achieve, but so worth while for us.

  3. Considering that I have to go to Master for any and all purchases for permission.... no. But the reason I have to go to him is because I used to spend $5 here or $10 there and never thought about how it added up.... till I was in the hole on my bank account and he had to bail me out. It wasn't that I was trying to hide them though, just that I was pretty stupid with my money...

I'm with Kelly about how we were raised though. My dad always hid purchases from my mom, and my mom would always buy little things and say "Don't tell Daddy this is new if he asks". Learned behavior is so hard to unlearn.

  4. Jen: You're free to do what you want.

Kelly: Congrats on complete honesty and openness. Had to smile at your mother taking the aggressive approach.

ariia: Yes, those $5 and $10 purchases can add up. Also, learned behavior is difficult to unlearn.

  5. Of the clothing and accessories that were 24 percent for men, I wonder if any of that consisted of lingerie that they were secretly hiding? Unlikely don't you think? If those type purchases were included, that figure would no doubt be much higher!

  6. Suzanne: Only you would think of that. LOL

  7. In my prior marriages I would "fib" my purchases LOL...this time no way- there is no way i can get away with hiding purchases and I would feel too guilty for all He has done to be such a good man to me...

  8. Everyone needs their little secrets, purchases or otherwise. As long as the finances are sound, I see no reason to pry. Excellent question and site

  9. I wouldn't hide purchases, and it wouldn't be possible to do so anyway. Hubby certainly sees everything when he hauls the things I buy in from the car.
