In laws

I thought it might be interesting as we near Mother's Day in the U.S.
to discuss the in laws. Do you get along well with them or are their
problems? And if so, minor problems or major ones that affect your
relationship with your spouse.

I hope you will share your thoughts.

  1. My inlaws are both deceased now. My father in law was a true gem, the father I always wanted and I miss him terribly. My mother in law was another story. I used to say she was a waste of flesh. Harsh, I know, but that is how I felt. I still took care of her for years after my FIL passed as she had a disability. It never came between Musicman and myself because we worked to not let it. I also made sure I never put him in the position of having to choose between her or me. That just is never a good thing. And, I figured no matter how bad his parents might be they were still way better then my own.

    1. You are such a mature woman, faerie. How thoughtful that you took care of her and never put Musicman in the position of choosing between her and you. And sorry about your parents.

  2. NOT! I have the mother in law from hell. Dragon isn't her sweet little boy anymore and I am to blame. I am solely responsible for turning him against her. My father in law is ok but he seems to go with the flow when it comes to his wife. Sad to say, that leaves my kids without their grandparents.

We get along with my mom sometimes. It depends on what kind of boy toy she has at the time. Thumbs up for the current toy.

    1. Your mother sounds quite interesting. Does she have frequent new boy toys? Are they younger? Tell us more.

    2. :) LOL Both! The current toy is 10 years younger. My step father had a son 2 years younger than my mom.

  3. I get along with my father in law greatly! I love the man!!
My mother in law. heh. well she's a different story. We USED to get along great, but once me and my hunny started getting serious and she realized I wasnt going anywhere she started to not like me. And then when I had my daughter she started trying to tell me how to raise her and oh lordy if I dont do things her way im the worst mom ever. But I dont always listen to her if I dont agree with it, even if tha means her being mean to me.
My hunny is really good at balancing it out. Idk how he does it but he is not put in the middle, nor does he take sides. if that makes sense.

    1. Nice that your hunny balances it all out and too bad she's not the doting grandmother. But someday don't be surprised if you don't always agree with the way your daughter is raising her kids. I don't always agree with how my daughter raises hers but I bite my tongue and just have fun with them.

  4. I get along with my in-laws just as well as my husband does, I suppose. My FIL can be kind of a jerk, but he's an excellent grandparent, so I think he just has some social issues with adults.

My husband and I just kind of band together to support each other until they're gone. It's worked pretty well so far. :)

  6. I love both my in-law, at 90 and 87 they are still working in their 3 gardens and she still has the family - usually between 15 and 23 of us - every Sunday for lunch. They treated me like a daughter since the moment we met. Nick also loved my parents, when my mom died he called his mom to tell her, he only said "This is Nick..." then he couldn't even speak. My MIL knew what must have happened and she began crying and couldn't speak either. They both just hung up. That's just how close we all were.

    1. PK: You are so fortunate. Sounds like you have a real Norman Rockwell family. I often think that famous Rockwell photo of the grandmother serving the turkey to the family doesn't exist in real life. But it sounds like it does for you.

  7. I feel fortunate. I get along with my in laws just fine, but we do live in different states.
My husband is close to my parents -his in laws.
So, it really is a blessing on all sides.

  8. I have been very fortunate in the in-law department. My in-laws supported me through my divorce, (they knew their son screwed up) and I still talk to them as there is a child of this marriage. They still (after more than ten years) tell me they love me. My current MIL is a lot like Marie Barone, except she cooks like Debra. : (

    1. You sound very fortunate in the MIL department. How nice that they supported you during the divorce. And that your current one is good, too.

  9. My life is right out of Everybody loves Raymond. My mother in law is close to us, but definitely would be as controlling as I was willing to let her be. I think we get along better than most. She has a key to my house and she uses it

  10. My in laws have both passed. Which sucks, cause out of the parents, they were the good ones. I really got lucky with them. The only weird thing is, since my husband is older than I am, his parents were the same age as my grandparents. But, once they were sure I was sticking around, they seemed to like me, plus once our daughter was born, they were awesome with her!
