I wrote a few days ago that the Oprah Winfrey Network (OWN) was going to have a show Tuesday on kink.
If you didnn't see it, Lisa Ling narrated it and it was surprisingly positive even though she is vanilla. She started out with a guy paying a Mistress to be domed, which didn't do anything for me. But then they told the story of two couples in the lifestyle. In one of them, they are both dom types so they had to adjust. I was surprised they were willing to go on camera.
And they had a psychologist talking about how BDSM couples are good at communicating. I've always felt couples in the D/s or BDSM have more intense relationships because they spend more time together in play time while vanilla couples often just have quickie sex.
Anyway, here's the link to the Oprah website with Lisa Ling talking about doing the show and also there are links to segments on the show:

The show also will be show again if you get the Oprah network and want to watch it. And sorry

I had a friend text me and tell me it was coming on, so I got to see it. I agree it was portrayed in a pretty positive light. It delved into the psychology behind bdsm , and the care, effort, love, and closeness that can be involved. They also did a god job of covering more than once that everything people do in bdsm is consensual. It's worth a watch, and did a decent job of explaining some of the aspects of bdsm to the vanilla population.

I agree with your assessment of the show. It was as positive as we could expect from mainstream TV.

A couple we are friends with told us a couple of months ago about the email they'd received inviting them to participate in the show. Due to the careers they have they could not go on camera and had to decline. So we knew a show on the topic was coming up, and I wasn't sure if this was going to be just more negativity to have to deal with. I haven't seen the show but thank you for sharing that it did portray a positive on the lifestyle. Now that Dave and I are working into a natural rhythm of who we are and the depth of our commitment to one another, I wonder if we would have ventured sooner if there was less negativity and more information readily available about the positive and healthy aspects.
ReplyDeleteGood point that couples might find it easier to venture into the lifestyle if there was less negativity and more information readily available about the positive and healthy effects of the lifestyle. That is why I think the blogging community is so good for newscomers because it gives them a positive look at the lifestyle.

I don't get that channel so I can't see it but could you tell me one thing, on the previews I've watched on such shows, it might show F/F or F/m but I have yet to see them show even a speck of M/f. On the little I've see it seems as if they still are afraid to show 'a boy hitting a girl' kind of thing.

PK: Good point. They are probably more reluctant to show a guy hitting a woman. I actually went back and surfed through and while they showed a guy using a violent wand on a woman who was tied, the only flogging they actually showed was by a woman.

It wont be shown here for a while no doubt but knowing Oprah it will have been done in a very tasteful and respectful manner. I may try and you tube it or search for it. I think DD couples are more in tune with each other and close together and communicate more because they have much more respect for each other. For me, there is no other way to live in a relationship.
