Here's an interesting article in the NY Times about a museum in Paris showing "Crinoline cages with their hints of perversity and domination'' back in the day. And men got into the act, too.
It also says that soft fabrics draped across the body in the era of ancient Greeks and Romans changed to structured clothing in the 14th century. But it is a mystery of why that happened. Anyway, here's the link:
