Vintage beach wear

I checked weather.com this morning and they had 359 beach scenes showing beach wear mainly in the 1920s to 1940s before the bikini when women always wore a one piece that went to their mid thigh and men sometimes wore tops. The pictures are from all over the world.

In photo 103 it even shows a policeman in West Palm Beach measuring how many inches of her thigh that a woman's suit left uncovered. It's unclear if that was a law.

And they also showed something called a Skreenette when women could change in privacy on the beach. It is kind of a circular tube that seems to inflate.

So if you're spending some holiday time at the beach, I thought you might like a reminder of how times have changed.

  1. Great photos! My grandmother (born 1881!) wore a baggy to the knee bathing suit back in the early 60s..we always wondered that she could really swim with all that fabric around her!
Hope your vacation has been ( still is?) wonderful!
