Wow....my marriage to my ex was us going to the local ministers home with our witnesses so was under $100. Neither of my sons had a traditional church ceremony and they both paid for their own but don't think either one spent over a few thousand. Ya know, $31,000 would be a nice down payment on a house. Just saying...
Would it surprise you to know FD that I have never been married? That was a decision I made very early in life and much to my mums disappointment, I stuck to it. I didn't come from a broken home, there was no domestic violence..pure unadulterated middle class living from working class roots. I believ(ed) in commitment but not sanctioning by church or state..and in agreement with Cat..houses last a lot longer than a 31,000 day. in my view a waste..but that's just in my view and I am aware and respectful of others choices.
Weddings can be $100 a plate these days so if you invite 200 people, it can quickly cost $20,000 before you buy the dress, plan the honeymoon etc. Was at a posh resort once on a business trip when they were setting up a wedding and the flower bouquets on the center of the table were so huge you couldn't see somebody sitting across the table.
My parents paid about $4000. but that was back in the early 1980's and they catered it themselves. MMmmm, BBQ, people talked about the brisket for years afterward.
I've not married yet, but my friend's wedding held in a church hall ended up being 15k! That seems nuts to me. I don't know what Sir and I will do when we decide to tie the knot. I do know it won't be 31000!
Ours was a cheapie, we went to Las Vegas, but our daughter's who was married in 1993 cost about $15,000 give or take a 1000.
ReplyDeleteCosts keep going up. Imagine what it will be like for the grandkids.

Two grad students on a serious budget. I planned ours for $8,000 back in 2008. No guarantee that I could do it again though.
ReplyDeleteSounds like you planned well. Can't resist asking if that included the cost of a collar.

ReplyDeleteHugs and blessings...
Cat
It would probably be more than most people put down on their house.

ReplyDeleteSurprised you aren't married because I thought you referred to a "hub'' in your blog. I also respect your choices.

Hub is my commitment FD, 16 or 17 yrs and a family. So he is my husband. Whats in a name hey? :),
DeleteOh gosh, im a little embarrassed to admit that mine was expensive, my dad paid for most of it, i think it was around £20,000 ish.
ReplyDeleteAnd we ended up divorced! would i do it again? not a chance, i wouldnt get married again full stop.
x
Does that mean you won't marry your owner?
DeleteFD
no i wouldnt FD, and he is fine with that, i dont see marriage as giving us any more than what we have now.
DeleteGosh, didn't realise how expensive it is to get married now.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Cat, that would be a nice deposit on a house.
Love,
Ronnie

ReplyDeleteWith that brisket, sounds like they got good value for their money.

ReplyDeleteI am sure you can make it a memorable day spending much less than $15000.
