My Little Red Book

Have you heard of this book? Not a guy thing but thought women might find it interesting.
Here's the link to a NY Times story about it. It's three years old but never heard of it.

  1. Hi, FD. How have you been?
Years ago, one of my friends and I were discussing when we first started our periods. She said that she had eaten red licorice the day she started and thought it was coming out. Lol.

    1. Kiki: Thanks for sharing the red licorice story. It was a classic and would be perfect for that book.

  2. That red licorice story is funny:)

Mine started the weekend before 6th grade. We were spending the night at my grandparents on Saturday? night, and I woke up with it in the morning. I was startled, but I knew what it was. My mother had told me about it ahead of time just as she should have.

The bad part was that, of course, I had no pads ready, since I wasn't expecting it that weekend, and I wasn't home, so I told my grandmother it had started, and she took me into the bathroom and hooked me up with one of hers. We're talking back in the days when women wore a garter-like thing to hold them up, before they had sticky strips to stick them to your panties, at least before that kind became the main kind.

It was very emmbarassing. Not because of the period, but because of my grandmother putting the huge bulky pad on me. Back in those days pads were seriously a good 1/2 inch thick. Most of you are probably too young to even remember such a thing.

Strangely enough, my sister's first period also arrived when we were away from home.

    1. t1klish: Thanks for sharing the story and it had to be embarrassing to have it happen at your grandmother's house. And, yes, sounds unusual she still had the pads at age 61. Let's hope you finish at a younger age.

    2. I got caught out with an unexpected period just before the car came to take me and my elderly relative to a funeral. Although she is well into her eighties she was able to provide me with pads to until later in the day. I suspect women know that bleeding can start anytime, anywhere and always keep something on hand for visitors.

  3. OMG, I just realized this is very bad news. My grandmother was 61 at the time. Why did she still have pads? Please God don't tell me my menopause won't come until after I'm 60!

  4. I got mine when visiting my dad in 5th grade. My parents separated and I visited him every weekend. I didn't know what it was, and I thought I had defecated in my pants (it had dried when I saw it)! I threw my clothes away, told no one, and vowed to forget about it... until later that day I noticed it was still coming out and it was red... then it dawned on me.
My nervous father had to pick up my first feminine products. He didn't know what to do, so he brought back EVERYTHING. I was well prepped for a year or two.

    1. Lea: I guess you and your father were both nervous at the timing.

  5. I was 12 years old (in the sixth grade). Right before I left to go to a baby shower I went in our bathroom to go pee and when I went to wipe I had blood all over the toilet paper. I wasn't scared or nervous or anything bad (I have three older sisters so I knew all about having periods). I was excited! I was finally growing up, lol!

  6. I had not heard about this book. I don't think I will be reading it anytime soon.

I was 10 yrs old when I started. I was in school and it was all over the back of my catholic school girl uniform. None of my friends had started yet and no one told me what was going on. When I got home my mother explained in plain, simple terms what was happening and how to take care of it.

Unforutnately with my background it gave me something new to worry about. Getting pregnant by my abuser. That is the part of my story that doesn't get discussed in vanilla circles.

    1. faerie: Sorry to you the way it happened and that you still had to worry about your abuser getting you pregnant. Yes, that part doesn't get discussed in vanilla circles, but I hope it helps you that you are able to share it here. What happened to you should never happen to a young girl, but you seem to have done a great job of overcoming that experience. I hope your blog post on it helped your healing. And good luck and a warm cyber hug.
