Beach Reading

I was talking to a couple of guys at the beach Sunday and the wife of one of them was reading a book. I glanced at the book cover and, yes, it was Fifty Shades of Grey.

So I asked her what she thought of it. Said I'd seen the thing about it on 20-20, but obviously  didn't tell her this was a subject I knew a lot about. She said all her girl friends were talking about it so she had to check it out. She said said she knew nothing about the lifestyle and said it was "out there'' and "graphic'' but didn't seem negative about it.

Said she couldn't "give in'' like that. I wanted to tell her submission isn't giving in but didn't want to appear to know too much about the subject. I haven't read the book but it does seem to have introduced vanilla people to the lifestyle. It is interesting how some books catch on. Laura Reese wrote two very good novels -- Panic Snap and Topping From Below and neither caught on the way this one did. The fact it is beach reading -- she said it was pretty simple and easy to read -- shows how popular it has become.

Have any of you noticed your vanilla friends reading it?

  2. I have been active in the BDSM lifestyle for about 10 years now. I found the negotiation sheet to be standard, as well as the average length of Mr. Gray's relationships. The kink was mild and the sex scenes not overly graphic.

The surprise I had was the number of FB friends reading it. Not sure if they are kinky or not. And NO, I'm not about to ask them. I will not out myself on FB.

  4. No vanilla friends i know of are reading it, but my vanilla (as far as i know anyway!) mother IS reading it. She brought it up the other day and i must have turned fifty shades of red. Pun intended. :)

  5. I recommended it to several vanilla friends. Actually I recommended it to my SIL's mother and she's 82. She couldn't put it down.

  6. Just found out today that our married older daughter is reading it. She lives in another city and it's unlikely I'll be discussing it with her. Perhaps my wife will...but she may evade conversation about it altogether. Fortunately, while she was growing up in our house, she never ran across our widely varied
sex toy and implement collection, my complete Shadow Lane publication collection, or my two storage boxes of spankvids. ;-)

    1. Good job in keeping your toy collection hidden from your daughter. You didn't want her to have TMI. Do you know what her lifestyle is?

  7. My mate is reading it and thinks its really funny and romantic even if the male lead is "a freaky perv" her words not mine...but i take no offence with her because she calls me that! (she knows somewhat about the kink i engage in).

The book has only just recently hit the uk and is causing a bit of a stir.

  9. I've read all 3 books and they were good. As my Sir says good housewife porn. I've even gotten into a discussion with an author who was slamming them because they started out as fan fiction and she didn't like the Twilight series. I told her that it was very in fair of her (since she had not read the books) to slam them and call them crap. I'm still in a discussion with her in regard to them. I'm going to offer to let her borrow them (through kindle loans) today so she can see for herself that they are not bad books. Yes, they could have used a good editor but over all I enjoyed them. They were an entertaining read. As for my Vanilla friends, I only know of one who has read them and she read them when they were fan fiction.

  10. FD- i love this, I can imagine a nice Dominant man on a beach, questioning a curious and naive woman about her choice or reading matter..hmm in front of her hub..does anyone else find that erotic..or is it just ths sick little puppy.

    1. It was certainly different and whatever you find erotic doesn't make you a sick little puppy. We all have things we like.

  11. LOL at littleOne's comment, it is kind of erotic. No, I do not know of any Vanilla friends reading the book nor have a read it myself. Daddy said he thinks I should read it so I am looking forward to seeing what all the fuss is about. I was suprised he approved since he starting limiting the Dom written blogs I can view. (obvioulsy it's Ok for me to be here). How's Lisa doing?

  12. I haven't had one vanilla friend even mention it. I have a 17 year old nephew who works part-time at Barnes & Noble and I text him last night and asked him if he's had a lot of requests for "50 Shades of Grey," and he said, "Ugh...every damn day." When he first started working there, I told him it killed me not to be able to come in (we live in different states) and ask him for the bdsm section and to help me find a book. He said, "There's a surprisingly large section of those books." I said, "Yeah, I know." He said, "Oh lord, I don't need to know this." Lol.

  14. I think that alot of vanilla people are reading it because the author of the shades books was a popular FanFic writer for the Twilight Series. As a matter of Fact the 50 shades of Grey are her Fanfic novellas with the names changed for sake of publication if I am not mistaken.

    2. So I gave in and borrowed the books from a friend of mine. They are not very well written and the "scenes" In them are rather tame if you look at it from a " playroom " Kind of sence. I mean sure.. The girl in the books is a virgin and not a submissive but even then... its kind of like another Saturday night at our house hehe

  15. Actually quite a lot of women I know are reading this..none are anything but vanilla as far as I know. I think it has gotten lots of attention in the press and on TV. I'm not likely to read them unless someone bought them for me.
If I thought I were missing something, I'd get them.

I can enjoy mindless literature and have read a few books/novels that really were meant to solely entertain, nothing more and nothing less. I tried to read Fifty Shades however I had to stop. It was not the content but rather the lack of proper grammar and diction. As I was flipping through each page I could not help but feel as though a child had written it and I found numerous errors; not in spelling or punctuation but rather in grammar and sentence structure. It saddens me that everything can be published and called a book now without any true understanding of the written word.

I will not encourage anyone to read these stories for I believe they are a disgrace to literature.

  18. I loved the idea of you interviewing readers on the beach, too! I talk to anyone reading a book because I love to write, and I am interested in knowing what people are reading, what they like etc. While I myself didn't really care for 50 Shades___ I think anyone who gets people to read has earned my kudos! Also, many paths lead to ttwd. Everyone starts somewhere....
