Debate on Shades

The debate on "Fifty Shades of Grey'' continues. Here's an article and video says it revitalized a marriage and also caused a divorce. It says 40 million copies have been sold and a movie is in the works.

So what are your thoughts. Have you read it and do you give it thumbs up or down?

Here's the link:

  1. I read the first one that was enough, its ok but i have more negative things to say about it than i do positive..it started off potentially good and then just went downhill fast.

But of course thats just my opinion, its a huge success so im guessing im in the minority.

  2. I read all three books, I will admit that it took a bit of pushing to get through them as I was not that impressed with them at all. Matter of fact I did write a review of them on my blog: http://southernsir.blogspot.com/2012/06/fifty-shades.html

  3. Put us in the "it revitalized our marriage column". While reading the books I came to the realization that I wanted what was in the book. The changes we made to our relationship ignited by the contents of the 3 books has been extraordinary and a result we are closer and have a better relationship both in and out of the bedroom.

    1. Good to hear it revitalized your marriage. It's great that you have a better relationship in and out of the bedroom.

  4. I read all three, but quickly enough that I was able to return them for a refund as I would never want to read them again.

I prefer sex scenes to take a back seat and be described subtly, not crassly. Whatever happens in the scenes is ok by me, I just don't want them pushed down my throat at every opportunity. I am perfectly able to imagine the details myself.

It's my preference that a writer should give the reader the opportunity to exercise his imagination and not spoon-feed him. The writer should give the bare bones and unless a detailed description can be made particularly beautiful or telling in some unusual way, it should not be provided too frequently. The competent reader will simply skip over the redundant parts until he meets up with the plot again. It's tiresome to have to do that.

    1. Some readers like a detailed description but to each his own.

  7. I didn't read any of this.. well, excerpts but not one whole book. It didn't do anything for me that fiction should.. not erotic, not particularly interesting either.
Not every book is for every person.. to each their own.

  9. Let's face it, we would all have written books like these if we knew in advance how they would take off! Good luck to the author! They are good 'holiday' reading - where you don't want to bog yourself down in anything that will stretch the brain! Fun too!

After 35 years of marriage it has changed our lives. I would never have realised how we could get stuck in a rut. We now have a wonderful selection of toys and feel so much younger and daring than we have in years! In fact, so much so that the spanking part was what led me to these sites in the first place and initiated my desire to know more about TTWD and Dd. So far spankings are purely for fun - they make us both feel hot! But what's wrong with that?!

We were once very "vanilla", but are now adventurous and inventive. So thank you very much Fifty Shades. I, for one, am very grateful, and would hope that no-one would sneer at me for it. Hugs, Ami

    1. I don't think anybody in blogland would sneer at you. Instead, I think most of us are happy for you that you are not adventurous and inventine. And it's great that you are enjoying those spankings. Nothing wrong with that. I hope you someday start a blog and tell us about about your adventures.

  10. I'm halfway through book one, or maybe a third? I have very little reading time these days, and I split that time between reading stuff for school (I homeschool my kiddo's) and other interesting things. The other day I put aside Gray to read Nat'l Geographic, so...

What I like about 50 Shades is that it offers the general public a wee glimpse into our world...and the more they see, maybe, MAYBE...the less "awful" it would be if someone leaked our "secret lives" out into the general public?
