Erotica

It looks like the success of "Fifty Shades'' has spawned more interest in erotic novels. The Anne Rice Sleeping Beauty trilogy, original written under a pseudonym, is being reissued with the tag line that if you liked Shades, you will love this one.

I haven't read Shades but read the Sleeping Beauty series years ago before I knew Anne Rice wrote it.

Anyway, I found this story about erotic writing, including one called "Carrie's Story,'' which is called an erotic S/M novel and the reviewer says it is even well written. Sounds like it might be worth checking out.

They didn't include Laura Reese's two novels, "Panic Snap'' and "Topping from Below'' that I recommend. But they do include Nancy Friday's Secret Garden which I also read years ago.

Here's the link if you want to check out any of the books.

Have you read any of these books?

And that reminds me I should do another chapter of my Lisa's Training stories. New readers can find them in the archives but I haven't written a new one in quite a while. Reminds me I need to get cracking on one.

  1. Molly Weatherfield (the author of Carrie's Story) is a pseudonym of Pam Rosenthal, who's written several erotic romance novels under her own name. I highly recommend Carrie's Story. It's something like The Story of O, but is better written, and what's more, is written with something like a sense of humor and more realism. Which you wouldn't think was possible in a novel about extreme S/M, but it is. It's definitely worth the time.

  3. I read fifty shades, but I was not impressed. Aside from it being farfetched the characters were weak, transparent, and at time contradictory to the point that I questioned whether the author actually read her own work as she continued on with the series. I read the first novel in Sleeping Beauty but by the time I read it a few years ago it was in print as Anne Rice. I think that was the first erotic novel of this kind I had ever read. It scared me. As time progresses I don't think it was scare me now compared to then.

  4. Carrie's Story is a great read, as is the sequel, Safe Word. The latter is being reissued, and Anneke Jacob, author of As She's Told, is writing an intro. Yay! These two books are well worth reading, and have a very modern "voice" - funny and smartass and thoughtful, as well. Enjoy!

  5. FD,

I agree that Fifty Shades was weak. Like...WTF is everyone so excited about?

I also agree that you better get cracking on the Lisa's training stories. You're slacking. Sometimes even a Dom needs a spanking :)

  6. I just feel a little miffed that I am a male writer who writes Femdom. Somehow Maledom is respectable...

    1. Good point. Although the femdom blogs get a lot of followers, there doesn't seem to be a big market for femdom erotica.

  7. I confess, I did read the 50 shades books and am currently reading Bared To You by Sylvia Day - so far it seems to be a copy of 50 Shades, very similar story line, character back stories etc.

    1. I guess it is not surprising it seems to be a copy since Shades was so successful.

  8. I've read the Shayla Black book mentioned in the article, although this is not the first book of the series; 'Wicked Ties' is book 1. I enjoyed all of them.
I expect the Sylvia Day book in the mail today; I like some of her other writing and look forward to reading this one.
Another author which I am surprised was not mentioned in the list is Megan Hart. I love her stories and her characters; very well written. I began with reading 'Broken' and 'Dirty', but she has just re-released several books in light of the 50 shades popularity.

  9. I tried to read the sleeping beauty books, but could not bring myself to even finish the first one it was so poor.

I resisted reading fifty shades, I wanted nothing to do with them, I assumed they portrayed this lifestyle as something that it's not. And now suddenly everyone was "into" the life that I had been into for over 13 years. But I realized I could not fairly " put down" a book I had not read, so I did. And I was so wrong. With in a matter of days I was done with the first and was a little depressed with the idea that there were only two more books to go. The BDSM element is pleasantly NOT the main focus in these book, but rather a complicated relationship... and haven't we all had those? Is it the most well written book ever? No. But after my long and busy days I prefer something easy to read that flows.

But nothing, will ever, top The Story of O for me. Poorly written? Hardly. Difficult to understand at times? A little. But amazing none the less.

    Just my thoughts.

  10. I loved and feared Story of O.. read it at 16 and couldn't imagine why I was so repelled and fascinated at the same time.
    Now I know.
The Beauty series were fun but not as good...I go back to O often.
I'll have to check out these other books. Thanks for some new inspiration~

  11. I read the Sleeping Beauty books, and I loved them. Would I want to do every single thing in the book or live my life in exactly that way? No, absolutely not...but that doesn't make them bad books.

Now, I have not read 50 Shades, but I have heard good things about it...from vanilla folks. I haven't heard anything good until this post and some of the comments about it from the actual BDSM community. I have still not decided whether or not I want to read it, but perhaps....

  12. I have read 50 Shades when it was fanfiction. I have read the Sleeping Beauty series long time ago. Same thing with the Story of O. Which were all better than that 50 Shades crap.
Another series I love is The Marketplace Series by Laura Antoniou. I have a friend who has a series called Finding Anna by Sherri Hayes (Books 1 & 2 are out, Slave & Need) that I enjoy. It's more D/s than BDSM but mostly romance. Another friend of mine just had an ebook come out which will be a trilogy. Book 1 is called The Submissive by Tara Sue Me. The other 2 in the series will be The Dominant and The Training. I have another friend who is in Germany that is currently rewriting her rough draft of a wonderful story not sure when it will be out. Guess I should read more books than just my friends. lol, thanks for the article and can not wait to meet you and attend one of your classes in July 2013 in Austin.
