Going Maintstream

How mainstream is "Fifty Shades of Grey'' getting?

Well, here's a snippet from the speech by Minnesota senator Amy Klobuchar at the Gridiron dinner Saturday night, which is a sort of a roast.

She said, "The President is here. You are looking good, Mr. President. We all know that the President has aged a little bit in the White House. His secret service code name used to be Renegade. Now it's 'Fifty Shades of Grey.' ''

I think that is a sign of how much the books have entered the popular culture.

  1. I dont think there is any doubt that the books have brought kink into the mainstream and there is no sign as of yet of it dying down...im sure the film (which inevitably will appear at some point) will keep it in the media and therefore fashionable.

I didnt like the book personally, but i do acknowledge that in some ways it has made kink more acceptable, but im still unsure as whether its a postive impact or not.

    1. I haven't read the books but I think that if it has made kink more accpetable, it is a plus. It has probably made a positive impact with some people and not so much with others.

  2. Very interesting. I'm glad someone somehow made a break through, that so many 'typical' people are reading the book. I do think it will have a positive effect on how the general population feels about kinky sex, others and even their own fantasies ! You have to wonder how many people read the book, talked with a girlfriend, and then had the courage to bring the topic up in the bedroom for the 1st time?

    1. Yes, you have to wonder if it has prompted many people to bring the topic up in the bedroom.

  3. LOL...that's pretty funny really...the book has certainly brought kink into the public view. Though I hated the book myself and didn't even finish reading it. I felt the Dom was a nut job and I just couldn't get through reading it. I mean for example the guy was tracking her phone before she even became his sub. If some guy did that to me I'd run so fast and hard! So I have kind of mixed feelings about the popularity of this book. Is this the message we really want people to get about kink? I think not but at the same time it does bring it out into the light and people are thinking about it and talking about it.

    1. I can understand your mixed feelings. But it does bring it into the light and probably a positive that people are thinking about it and talking about it.

  4. First of all I would like to say sorry for my English, the say hello :) I'm here for the first time and I looked for a few posts from the begging, and I think I'm going to come back here.
About the book... I think that it brings some better view about the kink, mainly because it won't be something sick and rather like a horror that intensive relation between a couple. But still... Main character can bring wrong view about Doms, as mentall ill or something... So as Desireous I've got mixed feelings.

    1. Your English is fine. What country are you from? I hope you will return here. If you go back in the archives I have some fiction entitled "Training Lisa'' that you might want to check out.

And I can understand your mixed feelings about the book.

  5. I read the book, and it did lead me to this world, but that was before every one and their grandmother knew about it, and even then I thought the book was not well written and had to many mistakes. I am kind of sad that it had to be THAT book to get that public on that topic.

    1. Yes, I guess it is unfortunate that it was that book that got the public to the topic, but at least they got to the topic.

  6. I agree, it has brought things to the forefront. I saw something the other day and was surprised. Wish I could remember what it was but it was a picture of a blindfold and a flogger but I can't remember what it was it was advertising. Guess I got lost in the surprise and missed the message. Is that a Fail?

    1. Once they use the images in advertising, it is a sign it is in the mainstream. Interesting that you don't remember what the advertising was for. Have you seen "Mad Men'' about the ad agencies in the '60s. The idea of a blindfold and a flogger would never come up back then.

  8. i read the first book and part of the second but lost interest very quickly, its only brought kink to the mainstream and not really what the lifestyle is about, again a sorry book to introduce people to what is out there, but at least people are talking about it which is something i suppose.
