Black Thursday

The day after Thanksgiving madness used to be called Black Friday. But now I see it is creeping into Thursday. Watching the games on TV, I saw ads for sales beginning at midnight or even sooner.

I have to admit my older daughter often gets caught up in the madness and so when I called her tonight to give her Thanksgiving wishes, I asked if she was going out tonight. She said she was already in line. This was before 9 p.m. and the mall didn't open until midnight. She was only upset they wouldn't let them in the mall and were making them stand outside in the cold. She had planned to just read a book while waiting. And she said the line was around the block at Toys R Us, which opened at 9 p.m.

So I had to ask how many of you get caught up in Black Friday and whether the savings are worth it.

And hope you all had a good Thanksgiving. I am stuffed on turkey and stuffing and all the trimmings. And did many of you watch the parades on Thanksgiving morning or even go to them in person?

And can Christmas be just a month away? Where does the time go?

  2. I had a wonderful Thanksgiving and now I'm back home and don't plan on leaving my home until Sunday! No way I'm getting caught up in that mess. For those who enjoy it, I'm happy for them and I promise not to be in their way!

    Hugs,

  3. Yep, heading out soon with mouse's GF's and mom-in-law. No, it's not really worth it for the great deals which mouse is convinced they only have 2 of whatever but make it sound like they have thousands.

But we have fun and it's a great way to work off that pumpkin pie!

    Hugs,

  4. Sky: I had a nice Thanksgiving with turkey and the trimmings. I can understand you avoiding the early crowds.

PK: I am only leaving the house today to play tennis and pick up a couple things at the grocery story.

Mouse: Hope you found some good bargains.

  6. No way I'd get out in that madness. I avoid malls any time, you couldn't pay me to do the Black Friday thing. Or - well, I guess you could, but you'd have to pay me a lot. laughing....

Hope you had a good Thanksgiving!

  8. FD, I am a Canadian and we do not celebrate Thanksgiving in Nov when you do. Ironically though the pull of capitalism being so strong we have black Friday. Ads have been running for weeks and lots of stores will be open "special hours" with "special deals" even though yesterday was another Thursday and today just another Friday. Go figure.

  9. Happy Thanksgiving FD. Nope, there is no amount of $ that would entice me into that insanity! I like online shopping anyway! They deliver to my door!

  10. I don't earn enough money to even buy food for myself, so shopping at all for anything other than absolute necessities does not exist in my life, and probably never will.

But having said that, back in the day when there was enough money for a few holiday gifts, never considered going on the busiest days. I can't stand waiting in lines.

  11. I don't venture out on black Friday anymore, but my sister in law and I used to make a morning of it. It's not so bad when you have someone fun to go with. The thing with me s if I am expecting crowds and wait time, then I am very patient with it all.

However, days are gone where it is really worth of. Sales still run after that Friday - and really good ones at that. I would only go out if there was something I really really really wanted and it was at a truly amazing price that I likely wouldn't see again, but I have found that is not the case hardly ever.

  12. Shopping on Black Friday? Oh heck no! I will venture out today to ring a bell but NOT to shop. Today is the day we put up most of our Christmas decorations. Fun Fun!

  13. I celebrate today as Buy Nothing Day and celebrate by volunteering for Community Coat Exchange. That makes me sound high and mighty, I'm not. I hate hate hate crowds. :)

  14. I'm not shopping today, but my sister took one of my girls and my niece. The left about 6:00 to get some "great deals". They wanted to go last night at midnight, but decided against it.

I'm really not in a shopping mood this year...we're planning on not spending as much for Christmas presents this year.

  17. Sir J: I didn't realize Canada had adopted Black Friday but since you probably have many of the same national chain stores that we do, it is not surprising. Black Friday has actually become important for the economy.

Sara: Shopping online makes sense. And no sales tax.

t1klish: Sorry to hear you can only buy the absolute necessities. Hope things get better for you in the future.

Sarah: If you have somebody fun to go with, it is probably not so bad. But good point that the sales continue to run after Friday.

Dragon's Rose: Yes, a good day to put up the Christmas decorations.

Kitty: Hope they got some great deals. And the economy needs you to shop more. LOL.

Blossom: Black Friday is such a success here that I am surprised that stores across the pond don't do it.

Iil: What surprised me when I went to play tennis is that the roads were crowded. Maybe everybody is in the stores.

And now the best Black Friday story. A guy in Virginia was arrested for selling pot and Ecstasy on Black Friday at half price. Supposedly sold $10,000 worth. LOL.

  18. Oh! LOL @ the guy selling the half priced drugs. Wow... We didn't go shopping, I am going to hit up deals online maybe. I can't stand crowds and the things I want are never on sale.

Hope you had a wonderful Holiday.

  19. Lil and Emi: Yes the story of the guy selling half price drugs was a hoot. The economy must be bad if the drug dealers are cutting their prices. LOL.
